Model Expo Contest and Swap Meet, 9 June 2018

This year's themes are 60 years of Chevy Impalas for the cars, and Poke the Bear (communist revolution to cold war era) for military models.

Every year, the San Diego IPMS chapter, and the San Diego Model Car Club put on a model contest and swap meet at the San Diego Air and Space Museum's restoration hangar at Gillespie field. This year's model Expo will take place on Saturday, June 9th from 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM with awards presentation at 3:00 PM. There will be vendors with kits, hamburgers and hot dogs for lunch, and a raffle. The restoration hangar is located at 335 Kenney Street in El Cajon. Just look for the building with an Atlas Rocket as a lawn ornament.

Once again, there will be a separate category for Gunpla, and Mecha models.

For registration information, please read the flyer and category list in the main article.

An Interesting Tidbit for Black History Month

I was reading Hot Rod Magazine, and came across their interview with Ed Welburn. Ed started as a designer with General Motors right out of college, and went on to become head of GM design, and vice president of Global Design for GM. Ed sounds like my kind of guy. Loves cars, and thinks about them as whole systems.

He had this to say about model cars:

HRM] You used to build model cars when you were a kid. Was that good training for your career?

February meeting

The February 20th meeting theme is Agitate some gravel; Competition cars of all kinds. As always, bring in whatever you're working on, or have completed; theme related or not.

A Very Comprehensive Kit Catalog

Wondering about some of the kits in you stash? Tim Shipley found a site with an extremely comprehensive listing of all types of plastic model kits. It will also help you manage your inventory. Just poking around, I found some interesting stuff I never knew existed. So, even if you don't have some mystery kit, it's a fun place to visit.

The site is ScaleMates, and can be found at

Themes for 2018

The brain trust has met and plotted our course for 2018. We should have at least a few good themes for you, regardless of the state of your kit stash. I hope you'll participate in at least a few of the themes this year.

January - Like it says on the tin; build the model like the box art.

February - Agitate some gravel; Competition cars of all kinds.

March -  It's a snap! Snap kits; they can be cars, planes, or any other kind.

April - Dawn of driving to the death of disco; cars made before 1987

All Better Now

Got our web site problem(s) ironed out. Images are back.

Home Sweet Home

I'll spare you the technical folderal, but we had to move our web site to a new server. That is now complete, and we should be in our current home for the next few years. Please let me know if you encounter any problems with the site. (just leave a comment)

2016 Good Guys Car Show and Model Contest

This is our first year managing the model car contest at the Good Guys car show. If you like hot rods of all kinds, this is the place to be. Weather has been just perfect, so come on down. We also have a make and take for kids on both Saturday and Sunday. Revell has been kind enough to give us 100 snap kits for each day. This year, it's a new Mustang. This event has been very popular and we always run out. Sunday's make and take will be at 11:00.
